THE CAT

We have information, but truthfully, few answers about the enigmatic world of cats. Those who live with one—or many—are often seen as calm and intelligent individuals, sometimes solitary and independent. Have you ever wondered why? There’s no definitive answer, but one thing’s clear: cats align perfectly with these kinds of personalities.

Our feline friend traces its origins back at least 10,000 years, to a time when it neither depended on nor lived near humans. Numerous studies have been conducted, yet no single conclusion has emerged. The history of its reproduction and migration across Europe—and later, the rest of the world—dates back roughly 5,000 years, around the Roman period.

Felis catus, a small carnivorous mammal, is the only domesticated member of the feline family. It’s referred to as the house cat to distinguish it from its wild relatives. Today, at least 73 breeds are recognized, and over 500 million cats share our homes around the globe.

Cats also hold deep secrets when it comes to their behavior—secrets that have sparked countless superstitions and myths across entire cultures, passed down through generations. The Egyptians, for instance, made them sacred figures, embodied in the goddess Bastet, symbol of beauty and fertility. In Chinese culture, the cat is seen as a living manifestation of fortune, peace, and love.

In the esoteric world, the cat represents honor, wisdom, and is considered a guardian of mysteries. It’s said to be a channeler of energy, with a sharp sixth sense that allows it to see and hear what humans cannot. True or not, like all animals, cats possess traits that make them unique—often beyond human understanding. That doesn’t mean having a cat determines good or bad luck in your life, but it does remind us that their presence carries something special, something that transcends reason.

As we close the chapter on the esoteric world, answers begin to emerge from the field of therapy. A cat, loyal to its human and its household, plays a powerful role in helping to heal stress and negativity, bringing calm to the environment around it. There’s growing recognition of the benefits of having a cat in homes with people suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s.
